Irene Veltman is a great and young (23 years!) artist from the little city Harlingen.
She studied Fine Arts at the Minerva Art Academy in Groningen. With her graduation in 2013 she won the Coba de Groot Stipendium and besides that she participated in the Affordable Art Fair 2013 in Amsterdam, she also had a number of exhibitions in the last year and sold two of her works to the Drents Museum in Assen. Right now she has her own exhibition at Museum Martena in Franeker. Rareriddim visited her in her studio to get to know this inspiring woman.

Besides the reflexive subjects I use in my paintings and drawings, I believe that my color use and precision characterizes my art. You will see many animals and especially birds in my work in an overall greyish palette.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
I get my inspiration from different things and places. It just depends on the interest at that moment and whatever that may be I would be extra alert to everything that has to do with that specific interest. For example, if I would have an idea for a portrait of scene that would have to tell a certain story, I would carefully watch all the poses from the people I see.
What do you want to accomplish with your art?
The best compliment I could get is an emotional expression from somebody. Whether that may be laughter or crying. Of course I prefer laughter. What I am aiming for now is to look for ways and stories to accomplish that. I do have some personal goals, but I rather keep them to myself.

What are you most proud of?
That has to be winning the scholarship and the exhibition in Museum Martena, where my work will be until November 30th.
What are your future plans?
I would love to learn as much as I possibly can to develop my art, concept as well as technique. I will always try to focus on that. In January I will exhibit at the Radbout University in Nijmegen. After that exhibition, I hope there will be more chances for me to exhibit at many more places and show my work to as many people as I can.
